What is Kinesiology?
We require balance in all these areas to have optimum health. For instance, shock, disappointment, an argument, depression, anxiety all have an instantaneous effect on us, which in turn can affect our energy, biochemistry and physical body. This is also true for each of the other components – each affects the other.
The body works on a priority system, which may not be logical to your conscious mind. However if you trust the process your body knows how to get better. For example if you cut your finger your body knows how to heal it. Therefore, muscle balancing removes blocks and assists the body to return to normal function.
So whether you suffer from an illness, wish to maintain and improve your health or wish to address how you feel or think, the energy balancing techniques of Kinesiology can promote self-healing and well-being as well as encourage a better understanding of your own health needs.

What does it help with?
You don’t have to be ill to benefit from Kinesiology. You may wish to use the sessions for personal growth, changing your attitude, reaching a goal ie new job, passing exams or driving test, improve sporting performance.

Kinesiology offers many techniques and corrections that can help create the right conditions for healing and restoration to take place. Kinesiology helps to empower you, to reach your full potential and to take responsibility for yourself. It can give you direction by raising your awareness of the choices you make.
The fundamental tool of Kinesiology is Muscle Testing, so what is it?
The person is asked to put their limbs in specific positions. Each position tests a specific muscle, which is controlled by electrical circuits in the body. I am not testing the strength of the muscle but the neurological pathways (brain to muscle and back to brain). Once the muscle is in position I apply gentle pressure. If the “muscle fires”, meaning the limb does not move, then the muscle and circuit are in balance. If the “muscle does not fire” and the limb gives to the applied pressure – then the muscle or the circuit requires something to correct the imbalance. Many different things can cause imbalances and there are many different types of corrections to bring back balance to the system. Further tests with the muscle that was not firing well will identify what it requires to regain its balance. Once the correction is carried out or identified (ie the need for nutrition supplements) then the muscle will work correctly. Muscle Testing can be used to explore many if not all things, such as:
Physical Imbalances: ailments including chronic or painful conditions. Difficulty conceiving. Eating disorders including weight problems. Food In-tolerances and what nutritional supplements to take.
Emotional Imbalances: You may be depressed, anxious, fearful, lack confidence. Perhaps you are going through relationship challenges, split up of marriage or loss of a loved one.
Mental Imbalance: Unable to switch off, negative thoughts.
What we eat is of vital importance for our health. It is beneficial to eat foods that nourish us and give us energy. However, there are foods, which deplete the body of vital nutrients and hence lower our energy levels. Food testing, using muscle testing techniques, is used to discover what foods are good for you to eat and which foods you would best avoid from your diet. Often the foods we most enjoy and most regularly eat can cause adverse reactions. It is therefore beneficial for each person to adjust his or her diet to that which suits them best. This can increase the body’s energies and our ability to heal ourselves
There are 3 categories of food:-
- Biogenic foods increase our energy and thus improve our health and well-being.
- Biostatic foods do not change our energy and thus have a neutral effect on our health and well-being. However we have to use the energy we already have to break down the food we are eating.
- Biocidic foods decrease our energy and thus weaken our health and well-being.
Ideally, you want to increase the Biogenic foods and decrease or limit the Biostatic food and avoid wherever possible any Biocidic foods. If the energy of a food does not match with the energy of your body you will not absorb and metabolise it, even although you may think it is a “good” food. As we are all individuals a “good” food for some people may not necessarily be a “good” food for you.
Food testing can change your relationship to food in a healthy and positive way.
Nutritional Supplement Testing:
Which Ones? How Many? How Often? How Long?
Vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, herbs and flower essences can all be tested to determine your specific needs.
Kinesiology takes the guess work out of what supplements you require. There is an array of products on the market that one can feel overwhelmed by or you can read books that suggests certain supplements for health symptoms and you may follow the recommendation. However, your body (through muscle testing) quickly identifies the supplements, if any, you require. For instance, you may be taking Vitamin C. You may require this but not be taking the right doze for you, perhaps you could be taking it at the wrong time of day, or the particular brand you are taking does not agree with you.
Like foods, it would be most beneficial to take supplements that are Biogenic, that are raising your energy levels and not Biostatic or Biocidic.
I have a range of test kits from companies that I use. However, if you are taking supplements I would ask you to bring them along to the session to be tested, to make sure they are in harmony and balance with your own body’s energy.

Due to age or infirmity it is sometimes necessary to use a Surrogate in the testing process.
This can be used if someone is; in severe pain, frail, infirm or old, a baby or young child, in a coma or paralysed, or for a pet or animal.
For instance a mother or father can surrogate for their baby or child to find food intolerances. A family member or friend can surrogate for someone who is paralysed or is in a coma.
The surrogate touches the person and this allows me to test muscles and the various circuits within the body to find any imbalances. It is important that the person who is surrogating is in balance himself or herself before we begin working with the client. Imbalances can then be identified and corrected on the client. The surrogate is then retested to make sure the correction has been effective. If the surrogate has doubts about this I can ask them to disconnect from the client and re-check the surrogate to show they do not have the imbalance.
The surrogate does not take on the ailment etc from the person they are surrogating for and usually there will be no discomfort. If someone is very sensitive they may feel changes momentarily within their own body.
The Importance of Drinking Water – the vital element
If there is only one thing you do to improve your life is to drink an adequate amount of water daily!
When you come along for a Kinesiology session I will always check that your body is hydrated before we begin. This is important because the electrical systems of the body require water to function correctly. If the body is dehydrated, the electrical circuits can get confused and may cause health challenges.
For instance, the Psoas muscle (one of the main muscles used by footballers in kicking the ball) is connected to the kidney meridian circuit. The kidneys help maintain a correct water balance in the body and filter out toxic waste from the blood. The Psoas muscle requires water to be in balance. If it doesn’t receive the right amount this can cause a weakness and a change in posture. So, sometimes backache can be result of dehydration.
Unfortunately, teas, coffees and fizzy drinks do not count towards your 6 to 8 glasses of pure water a day. Tea and coffee, etc are diuretic and cause the body to lose water. They may also contain ingredients such as sweeteners and flavourings.
Filtered water or good quality bottled water (still not sparkling) may be preferential to tap water. Normally, it is best not to drink with your meals as this dilutes your digestive juices. 20/30 minutes before a meal and one and half hours to two hours after a meal is recommended.

Kinesiology takes a holistic approach to weight loss. There are many reasons why someone may not be able to lose weight and the root of the cause requires to be addressed. It could be you are eating foods that are not nourishing you, perhaps you are not getting enough exercise, or you could be eating because you are depressed, lonely, stressed and have no motivation to eat healthy foods. It could also be that your brain is not recognising the mechanism that maintains your fat stores and therefore the appetite is not adjusted. Whatever the reason, your body, through muscle testing, will direct you to what is required to achieve a balanced approach to diet and lifestyle. This is why the root of the problem is important to address if you wish to change your attitude to food.
Food Testing: This is an excellent way to determine what foods are good for you to eat. You may be quite surprised at some of the foods that may be good for you. It is important to eat foods that will raise your energy levels and not lower them. You may be thinking you are eating healthy foods however many people are intolerant to pesticides on fruit and vegetables and find a change in health when they change to an organic diet.
Supplements: If you are craving for foods it can indicate a need or deficiency in your diet. You may be eating a healthy diet but not able to digest, absorb and/or eliminate waste properly. Some people may be under stress and therefore not getting the most out of their food. Kinesiology testing can identify what supplement is required, why you require it, and for how long you require to take it for. Your body is always changing so this may require to be changed every couple of months.
Goal Setting: Many people do not know how to reach their ideal weight because they have been unsuccessful in the past. Psychologically many people give up before they have started. A goal gives direction, just like road signs. Without the sign posts you may get lost on the way. Some people may get there, others may get there eventually and some may never get to their destination. Therefore, some people require to know the steps so the goal can be achieved. The body may wish to work with a challenge ie “I am comfortable with the weight I am”, “I reach my ideal weight easily”, “I like the way I look” or the challenge may be nothing to do with your weight! The weight is the symptom so the root cause requires to be addressed. Your body identifies the correct goal through muscle testing and then throughout the session the body will bring up the stresses surrounding the goal so they can be defused and infused with a positive charge. This can be anything from behaviours, emotions, attitudes, foods, exercise, clearing toxins from the body etc. We are all unique and have our own story to tell and kinesiology can help to “track” where your resistance is to reaching a happy life.
